10 New Weddings Trends for 2020

As we enter a new decade, it’s clear that the traditional wedding has changed over the years. Every timeline we create is so much different than the one before. There is always something new, surprising and exciting to look forward to for our guests! (and for our planning efforts 😉)

With help from our friends at Vennebu Hill, we collected a list of ten new wedding trends to consider in 2020:

1. A New Order of Events

We mentioned the timeline earlier. Couples are switching things up in a few different ways.

First dance before dinner is served. To capture the spotlight, we have seen couples jump right into their first dance after they are announced for “grand march” and before dinner.

Later Ceremonies. There are a few reasons people are opting in for later ceremonies – First looks and everything is all at one venue. First looks are becoming more common. A first look is when the bride and groom see each other and take photos with the wedding party a few hours before the ceremony.

2. King’s Table

This is a new favorite for us. Especially since we recently purchased a few elegant love seats for our couples. A king's table is essentially a head table that faces each other with the wedding couple at one end. The table is in the middle of the room rather than against the wall.

A few things to note – a king’s table usually takes up more space than a traditional head table. Keep that in mind when you are planning a larger wedding and working on the seating chart. Also, a king’s table has more room for an amazing, flower indulged centerpiece… aka our specialty!

3. Hanging Florals

Have you ever thought about HANGING your centerpieces? Check out this recent wedding we did at Vennebu! It’s not easy, but it’s so beautiful and worth it. We love making your wild décor dreams come true!

4. Food Stations and Non-Formal Dinners

More and more we are seeing couples decide against the traditional sit-down dinner and instead, make it an experience for their guests. They serve dinner in different ways with open seating, themed food stations, cocktail hour, lounge areas and more. We help coordinate and communicate with guests, so they know what to do and how to enjoy their night. The guests have enjoyed the creativity and surprise behind this new wedding trend.

5. Dessert Room or Display > Weddings Cakes

Many of our couples from 2019 decided to have a dessert display instead of a traditional wedding cake. Cheesecake and cupcakes were the most popular, but we did have a gelato bar too. Oh, and how could we forget that WALL of macaroons. Some of our couples still want the fun cake cutting pictures when the bride smears the frosting on her new husband. We suggest having a small cake for pictures and take it home to enjoy for just the two of you.

Soon on the blog - For one of our favorite weddings in 2019, we built a room with six self-standing shelves that were filled with 20 different types of desserts. The cake was right in the middle (pictured below).

6. Live Music

Drum roll pleeeease! So many of our couples are booking live entertainment like bands and dueling pianos. We have nailed down the coordination and transitions through sets, while also enjoying ourselves throughout the night. Reach out to us if you are looking at live entertainment, we have some great preferred vendors you can jam out to!

7. Floral!!!

Bridal parties are decking out in floral dresses and ties. Talk about a statement. We are in love! While we are on the topic of clothing, we would like to point out the comeback of shawls and wool scarves for bridesmaids. These make great gifts ladies.

8. Signature drinks

A step up from the traditional beer and wine. Couples are sharing their “signature drinks” with guests. Katie from Vennebu especially loves the spiked dessert drinks, like Rum Chata with root beer floats or Baileys with coffee. It’s all about the experience (and the drinks).

9. Ring Bearing Dogs

Ahhh, the dog of honor. How adorable is this idea?! Not only is it great to have your bestie apart of your big day, but the pictures are one of a kind. We might be selfish and insist on you bring your dog so we can meet them! 😊

10. Colorful, Bold Wedding Flowers

Flowers offer so much room for creativity, why not go bold! Our clients are dreaming in full color when they are pinning their wedding flower pictures. Whether they are hanging flower centerpieces or beautiful, bountiful bouquets, color flowers are making a move. This is our final and favorite wedding trend of 2020!
